James K. Latham, ‘39

Jim Latham attended W.M.A. four years. The 1939 “Recall” stated that in a popularity contest in the senior class Jim would rank at the top. He held the esteem of all who knew him. He was a star athlete, playing on many teams and winning varsity letters in football, basketball, and baseball. He graduated as a cadet lieutenant and was very active in school life. Lt. Latham then attended the University of Illinois but left shortly before his graduation to join the U.S. Marines. After winning his commission, he was married to Miss Barbara Martin of Champaign, IL. They had a few short months together before he was sent overseas. Though no particulars have been given, Lt. Latham evidently made the supreme sacrifice in combat during one of the battles in the Pacific, Okinawa, as the Marines slowly cleared the island of fanatical Japanese.
